Motion Graphics Without After Effects: A Guide for Founders and Marketers

Those are structural reasons — client file handoff, ecosystem lock-in, and the cost of relearning a tool you're already fluent in. No alternative solves them, and pretending otherwise is how this category earned its credibility problem.
This guide is for the other reader: the founder, marketer or designer who searched for an After Effects alternative because they need animated video for a product and assumed After Effects was the only road there. It isn't, and for your use case it's probably the wrong road.
What motion graphics actually are, for a product team
Motion graphics are animated design — type, shapes, data and imagery moving with intent. The distinction that matters for product work is against the two things they're often confused with:
- Not video footage. Nothing is filmed. Everything is drawn, which is why it works when you have nothing to record.
- Not screen recording. A screen recording shows what your product does. Motion graphics explain why it matters — and can show a product that doesn't exist yet.
For a product team the practical applications are narrow and repeatable: launch videos, feature announcements, animated statistics, explainer sequences, social cutdowns, and the title cards and callouts you layer over real footage.
The reason this matters more than it used to: motion graphics are the only format that serves two situations founders keep running into. The first is having no product to record — one r/startups thread asks directly about building a demo video "just off of figma mockups." The second is having a product that's real but not visual, described on Indie Hackers as being "a little technical and not that sexy in terms of screens to show in a video demo." Screen Studio, Loom and Arcade are excellent tools that cannot help with either.
The six things that make motion
You can direct motion graphics well without touching a bezier curve, but the vocabulary is worth ten minutes because it turns "I don't like it" into "make it ease out instead of linear."
are the individual still images that make up video. Everything in motion design is ultimately a value at a frame — position, opacity, scale.
is how many of those play per second. 30fps is standard for product video; 60fps is smoother and heavier.

is the curve that interpolation follows. This is the single highest-leverage concept in the list. Linear motion — moving at a constant rate — reads as mechanical and cheap. Almost everything in the physical world accelerates and decelerates, and motion that doesn't looks wrong even to viewers who couldn't name why.
are the physics-based alternative to easing curves, defined by stiffness and damping rather than a curve shape. They produce the slight overshoot-and-settle that makes UI motion feel alive.

The rules that separate professional from amateur
This is the house style we encoded into GenMotion's scene writer. It's opinionated, and it's most of the difference between motion that looks designed and motion that looks generated.
Typography is minimal and quiet. Default to weight 400–500 for headlines. Never 700+. Hierarchy comes from size and colour contrast, not weight — bolding everything is the most common tell of amateur work. Sentence case, never all-caps (small tracked-out eyebrow labels are the one exception). One type size pair per scene: a hero size and a supporting size, three sizes maximum. No gradient text, no text shadows, no outlines.
Less text, more air. A scene says one thing. Two to six words for a headline, one short supporting line at most. If you've written a paragraph, cut it. Whitespace is the design.
Ease everything. Nothing moves linearly unless it's a deliberate effect. Default to a smooth out-ease or a spring.
Stagger entrances. Elements arrive 3–6 frames apart, combining opacity with a transform — a 40–80px rise, or a scale from 0.96 to 1. Subtle beats showy every time.
Go dark and cinematic by default. Deep backgrounds (#0a0a0c, subtle radial glows), one accent colour per scene family used sparingly. Primary text slightly off-white (#ededef), secondary text muted (#8a8a93) — and most of your text should be the muted tone, with only the focal phrase at full contrast.
The frame must never be fully static. This is the rule most often broken by generated video. Choreography spans the whole duration: entrances staged throughout rather than all in the first second, and ambient motion between beats — slow drifts of a few pixels over several seconds, glow pulses, gentle scale breathing from 1.0 to 1.02. A viewer who pauses should still sense the design; a viewer watching should never feel the video has stopped.
You are making video, not a website. This is the failure mode that ruins more product videos than any other. Scenes are frames of a film that people watch — nothing is clickable. No buttons, no "Get Started" pills, no nav bars, no three-column feature grids. If you need a call to action, express it cinematically: the product name and tagline sweeping in, the logo settling centre-frame, a URL in elegant type. Reference film title sequences and keynote videos, not landing pages.

A word on the template-driven end of that table. The complaint founders make about templates is consistent and worth taking seriously — from r/indiehackers: "I've tried templates but I really don't like most of them as they feel sooo generic and I prefer something more custom." If a viewer can recognise your template, it's costing you more credibility than the video is buying.
The same objection now attaches to AI-generated video, more sharply. On r/MotionDesign, one designer's assessment of the current crop was that "AI produced techbro videos are soulless and look like absolute dogwater." That's a fair description of a lot of what's out there. The useful question isn't whether AI video can be generic — it obviously can — but whether a given tool gives you the three things that prevent it: your real brand assets, per-scene editability, and design defaults that aren't the same three templates everyone else is using.
The sharpest version of the critique came from the same thread, and it's about writing rather than animation:
"AI will really struggle to nail the concept and messaging… You could put all the slickest animation techniques on a video, but if the message isn't clear, it'll fail. And AI fails with that, constantly."
This is correct, and it's why the script step matters more than the render step. A tool that hands you a finished video without letting you rewrite the message first is optimising the wrong half of the problem.
What "AI motion graphics editor" should mean
Most tools marketed this way are generators, not editors: you prompt, you get a video, and your options are accept or regenerate. That's fine for stock B-roll and useless for anything that has to carry your brand.
The editor half is what makes it usable for product work:
- You can see the timeline. Scenes have durations you can change and an order you can rearrange.
- You can edit individual scenes rather than rerolling the whole video and hoping.
- The preview is truthful. If what you're scrubbing isn't exactly what will export, you're reviewing a guess.
- Your brand goes in, not a template. Real fonts, real hex values, real logo.
