Regenerating a masked region of an image or video while leaving the rest of the frame untouched.
Inpainting regenerates a masked region of an image or video frame — removing an unwanted object, fixing a glitch, or swapping a detail — while leaving everything outside the mask untouched. It's the generative equivalent of a targeted retouch rather than a full re-generation.
Its counterpart, outpainting, extends the frame outward instead, generating plausible new content beyond the original edges — useful for changing an aspect ratio without cropping.
